What do Slash, Keith Richards and Jimmy Page all have in common (apart from excellent barbers)? They all made their name playing one of the most iconic and easily recognisable guitars ever made – the Gibson Les Paul.

Based on the design for the hugely popular Freelancer Chrono, this timepiece also features a well proportioned 43.5mm stainless steel case. The tachymeter bezel is black PVD coated and intended to resemble the lacquer finish on the famous Les Paul Black Beauty. The contrast between steel case and black bezel is a beautiful effect, and gives the watch a sporty feel.

On the dial the association with Gibson really becomes apparent. Around the outside of the dial there is a 6 line Guilloché pattern – intended to represent the 6 strings found on a Les Paul – and the hour markers that overlay these lines are fret-shaped. Also overlapping this patterning at 12 o’clock is the Gibson logo, contained within the outline of a Les Paul headstock.

Next to the date window at 4.30 is the signature Gibson split-diamond inlay, finished in gold. The gold finish is echoed on the chronograph counters (30 minutes at 3 o’clock and 12 hours at 6 o’clock), around the date window and on the central seconds hand.

Like all Raymond Weil watches, the movement in the Freelancer Chronograph does exactly what it needs to, providing accurate time-keeping and offering 46 hours of power reserve. Visible through a sapphire crystal caseback embellished with the Gibson logo, the self-winding Calibre RW5010 movement also utilises 27 Jewels.
