Raymond Weil have demonstrated time and time again that they feel the same kind of passion towards their favourite musicians as many of us, and of course, the greater the legacy left by the artist the greater the passion felt by all involved. It’s a good job, then, that the artist this timepiece is dedicated to has had a tremendous impact on both music and culture. Born Davy Jones he performed under a variety of titles including Halloween Jack, Alladin Sane and Thin White Duke, as well as the better-known Major Tom and Ziggy Stardust.

Raymond Weil have chosen to base the David Bowie tribute watch on the Freelancer – a smart decision as the 42.5mm stainless steel case is a great size for the majority of wrists and the thin profile and angled lugs mean it sits comfortably even after hours of wear. The Swiss mechanical self-winding movement that powers this timepiece uses 26 jewels and offers 38 hours of power reserve – plenty for regular and occasional wearers alike.

Raymond Weil’s experience creating music-themed timepieces has paid dividends on this watch, and the piece is as refined and sophisticated as one could want. The most obvious tributes to David Bowie are found on the dial; the signature lightning bolt first seen on the cover on 1973s Aladdin Sane is found at 12 o’clock, and the pop-art logo designed by Andy Warhol for the cover of 1974s Diamond Dogs can also be seen near the 6 o’clock. These highlights are finished in red and create a beautiful contrast with the black circular satin-brushed ‘vinyl’ dial. The simplicity of the dial as a whole means that the timepiece is clearly legible, and the Super-Luminova coated barrel-shaped hands only enhance this.

On the reverse of the timepiece the connection to David Bowie has been reinforced, as the sapphire crystal case back features a unique portrait by Terry O’Neil. It also carries an engraving around the edge of the case revealing the number of the watch, as the Freelancer David Bowie timepiece is limited to 3000 pieces worldwide.
