BREMONT AIRCO
9th June 2017
Named after the ‘Aircraft Manufacturing Company Limited’, Bremont’s new AIRCO collection is made up of two models: the MACH 1 and the MACH 2. The best collections of watches invariably share a central theme, and with the AIRCO range the theme is vintage military timepieces. As such, both pieces feature cases measuring 40mm – closer to true vintage timepiece size, and slightly smaller than most other Bremont timepieces – as well as a number of other details intended to enhance their appeal.
AIRCO MACH 1
The AIRCO MACH 1 features a 40mm satin finished and hardened stainless steel case which is manufactured in the UK using Bremont’s technical three piece ‘Trip-Tick’ construction. This houses the new, smaller, BE-92AE movement which offers 38 hours of power reserve, beautiful finishing and, of course, is chronometer certified to guarantee the highest possible standards of accuracy.
The foundation of the dial is matt opalin metal, and features an integrated dial ring around the exterior. All numerals and markers are Super-Luminova coated to aid visibility, and the hands feature Super-Luminova combined with satin finished nickel. The standout feature however is the orange sweeping second hand, which makes the timepiece feel much more lively and vibrant.
Supplied on a vintage calf leather strap, the MACH 1 takes vintage styling cues and brings them to life with a clear, legible and exciting dial.
AIRCO MACH 2
Another timepiece from the new AIRCO range, the MACH 2 is a perfect example of what a vintage styled officer’s dress watch can be in the 21st century.
Like the MACH 1, the MACH 2 also uses a 40mm case, but it is polished – rather than satin finished – in order to construct the formal appearance necessary for a dress timepiece. Incredibly the stainless steel used in the case of the MACH 2 is also hardened, which is a process that becomes much more complicated when a polished finish is desired. This supremely formal exterior is paired with an anthracite coloured dial adorned with elegant polished numerals and hands – the latter also featuring Super-Luminova for added visibility. Bremont have – wisely – chosen to keep the strap as simple as possible, and the MACH 2 is supplied on a black leather strap with polished pin and buckle clasp.
Another feature of the MACH 2 that requires attention is the movement. While vintage watches are popular with watch enthusiasts the world over, there can be no denying that modern movements keep better time and require less attention than their predecessors. To that end, the MACH 2 is powered by a BE-92AE chronograph certified movement with 38 hours of power reserve.
The MACH 2 presents a wonderful opportunity to own a timepiece with vintage appeal and formal styling, but that operates with all of the accuracy one would expect from a modern Bremont timepiece.
