AW16 GADGET MAN
5th December 2016
You don’t have to be a tech Geek to appreciate a good gadget. Here are our top picks of what the gadget world has to offer, from goggles to tourbillons. It’s a #manthing
GEO.GRAHAM ORRERY TOURBILLON
Fans of Glasgow’s gloriously esoteric Kelvingrove Museum will already be familiar with an orrery, as the Steampunk mechanics and whirling, hand-painted Solar System of planets on the ground floor can’t fail to hijiack the fascination of the most casual visitor. Well, here’s an equally impressive example in wrist size, with a central tourbillon carriage forming the whirring Sun, with Earth and Mars orbiting. This mechanical masterpiece is made for Graham by the horological maestros of Christophe Claret, which essentially means it’s worthy of its own roped-off showcase at the Kelvingrove.

ARNOLD & SON GOLDEN WHEEL
A watch whose mechanism is inspired by Meccano – why hasn’t anyone thought of this before? The relationship between the construction toy’s struts, bolts and panels and horology’s bridges, screws and mainplates is a no-brainer, not to mention tremendous fun. Most brands’ reverence for their own heritage would forbid them from something so frivolous, but Hublot has ploughed its furrow as a future-forward experimentalist, and its high-tech aesthetic lends the perfect playground. The result is actually one of the brand’s most coherent blend of “chassis” and “engine”, the iconic titanium Big Bang case framing a highly architectural 10-day-power-reserve movement, matte-coated in PVD.

JAGUAR F-PACE ACTIVITY KEY
Simplicity and ease of use are highly sought after qualities in new-car tech, and this latest development from Jaguar certainly fits the bill! For active people who enjoy running, cycling or any number of other activities, finding a place to keep your car keys safe while you’re out and about can be more difficult than it seems. The Activity Key, available as part of the “Sporting Package” on the Jaguar F-Pace, provides an elegant solution. Worn on the wrist, the Activity Key is robust and fully waterproof, as well as smart and subtle.
RAYMOND WEIL FREELANCER SKELETON
Who needs an orrery of planets or a merry-go-round of wandering satellites when the traditional Swiss mechanical movement is enough of a constellation in itself – an intricately tweezered together ensemble of bridges, wheels, pinions and levers, which you can see ticking away in perfect harmony from the dial side in this case. With its PVD-coated case and ruthenium bridges, Raymond Weil has lent a certain menacing stealth to proceedings, making this more at home on Batman’s utility belt than the wrist of an astronomer.

ABOM ANTI-FOG GOGGLES
There’s nothing worse than speeding down a snowy mountainside unable to see through your fogged up goggles. This is a frustrating reality for snow sports enthusiasts, and until now all solutions have failed. Incredibly, the answer has been found! Abom fit their goggles with a heat conducting lens that is activated at the touch of a button to prevent fogging. The Carl Zeiss lens is available in four colours to suit different weather conditions, while also matching your outfit and ensuring your attire is on point en-piste.
