The SS18 catwalks were full of oversized jewellery from earrings that could take out the person next to you if you moved your head too quickly to cuffs that took up half your arm. While statement cuffs are still around, it appears Tom Ford has decided it’s time for a change. For his AW18 show he sent models down the catwalk wearing layered bracelets to create a more detailed and showstopping look. And if Tom Ford decrees that this is the way forward, then that is all we need to know.

COCKTAIL HOUR IS BACK

The rise of the cocktail bar shows no signs of waning, but things are getting more glamorous. Forget the dingy speakeasys that kickstarted the trend, now it’s all about the kind of opulent bar at which you’d imagine the cast of Gossip Girl getting drunk. Now that we’re more likely to be found sipping an Old Fashioned somewhere fabulous than chugging back Chardonnay at the local, you need the ring to match. There’s really no rules – diamonds are always in style but coloured stones work just as well – the only thing you need to remember is go big or go back to your local.

VINTAGE INSPIRATION

Dig out your kilts and start watching Downtown Abbey on repeat, because tweed is back. The woollen fabric beloved of the upper set featured heavily on the catwalk. It was in coat form over floor-skimming skirts at Calvin Klein, draped mannishly as a suit at The Row and flamboyantly Gaucho at Marc Jacobs. When it comes to accessorising, a material with that sort of heritage demands vintage-inspired design, like this gorgeous pendant, that can hold their own against this rather attention-seeking fabric.

SPARKLE LIKE MARKLE

We’ve all stopped obsessing about who was going to design the wedding dress of Meghan Markle, the now Duchess of Sussex, so now we can get back to the business of analysing everything else she wears. Those with eagle eyes, and long lenses, have noticed that her signature jewellery style is to wear delicate diamond-studded rings on more than one finger. The Duchess favours yellow gold, which is making a slow but certain comeback, however rose gold is a better choice as it will flatter sun-starved winter skin better.

CHOOSE YOUR TRIBE

Apparently it’s all Hedi Slimane’s fault the current vogue for incorporating elements of tribal art into fashion and jewellery. He added some African accents to the private salon at Saint Laurent’s Faubourg Saint-Honoré boutique and everyone decided to follow.
Word to the wise – don’t go full on with this one or there’s a risk you’ll be accused of cultural appropriation. However, a few pieces worn alongside the jewellery you usually wear and it’s an instant style injection that will bring your look straight into 2018.

GOING FOR GOLD

There’s no denying the unmistakable charm of ice white diamond jewellery, however, this season there is a demand to turn up the heat in the form of golden pieces. Gold jewellery has never really been out of style, however, 2018 has seen the biggest gold rush in recent years. From dramatic statement collars to dainty and delicate pendants, there’s no “one size fits all” rule when it comes to adding a golden touch to your style.
