Think time traveller and one man more than likely springs to mind – Dr Who.
However, you don’t need to don a long stripped scarf or hop in a Tardis to get from A to B, and you certainly don’t need to make your way across galaxies to lay claim to a GMT timepiece. In fact, for any modern man who finds himself jetting off on holiday with his family and friends or off on a business trip a GMT model is the perfect accessory.
Now it is completely understandable why horology fans might be a little apprehensive to take on a GMT model. Despite being highly desirable, with its useful ability to display additional time zones, the complication has a reputation for being both difficult to use and not being legible as other models.
That was until Hublot unveiled its Big Bang Unico GMT at SIHH 2017 earlier this year. Not a brand to shy away from a challenge, Hublot knew that it had the skills, expertise and gumption to reform the GMT model. Speaking of the inspiration behind the model, Hublot CEO Ricardo Guadalupe said: “Every complex problem has a simple solution. It simply depends on how we look at it. I travel so much that, as often as not, my watch is the only way I can keep track of what time it is at home, and where I am landing.”
However, even Mr Guadalupe has had to hold his hands up to struggling with the complexities of the design of traditional GMT pieces. He added: “And, I must admit, I have never found a GMT model which is simple enough to really be useful, and that I can use as intended. Thanks to the ingenuity of our R&D team, this is now possible and, believe me, the Big Bang Unico GMT is sure to inspire imitators”.
So just what makes this design different than the rest?
Well, the Unico GMT features the same HUB1251 UNICO movement with patented proprietary GMT module, comprising of 358 individual components and a 72 hour power reserve. It is also a marvel of design. A unique addition to the Big Bang collection this carbon fibre model features an engraved dual-time bezel with blue composite resin lower bezel with titanium screws. The blue and black skeleton dial, the devil is in the detail of this impressive timepiece.
Also featuring a carbon fibre and black plated deployment buckle on a rubber strap, it is a sturdy 45mm model that leaves an impression.
Building a watch collection is a lifelong journey with big brand milestones along the way. However, there comes a time when your watch just isn’t cutting it and it’s time to invest in something new.
