Of all the pieces released at SIHH 2017, nothing piqued our curiosity quite like the Hublot Big Bang Unico GMT. Timepieces with a GMT complication have always been among the most desirable, and the ability to display additional timezones has proved a useful feature. However, timepieces with this ability are often difficult to operate, and be less clearly legible than other models. Hublot knew that they could do something truly special with this timepiece, and CEO Ricardo Guadalupe perfectly sums up their motivations:
“Every complex problem has a simple solution. It simply depends on how we look at it. I travel so much that, as often as not, my watch is the only way I can keep track of what time it is at home, and where I am landing. And, I must admit, I have never found a GMT model which is simple enough to really be useful, and that I can use as intended. Thanks to the ingenuity of our R&D team, this is now possible and, believe me, the Big Bang Unico GMT is sure to inspire imitators”.
– Ricardo Guadalupe, Hublot CEO
With their trademark ingenuity and incredible technological prowess, Hublot have created a GMT mechanism that functions unlike any other timepiece. At first glance one would assume the pushers above and below the crown are used to operate a chronograph mechanism, but they do in fact adjust the position of the arrow shaped GMT hand. A press of the top push-button moves the GMT hand forwards an hour, the bottom push-button backwards an hour. This makes it incredibly easy to set your second timezone, and therefore makes the watch itself much more useable.
The Unico GMT is available in two 45mm case options, satin finished and polished titanium or carbon fibre. Both models feature the same HUB1251 UNICO movement with patented proprietary GMT module. The 1251 offers 72 hours of power reserve, and is comprised of 358 individual components. Both timepieces are also supplied on blue and black structured natural rubber straps – although the ingenious “One Click” strap change mechanism means you are free to alternate as you wish.
