AUDEMARS PIGUET ROYAL OAK CHRONOGRAPH

DRAMATIC EFFECT

19th May 2017

Watchmaking has in recent years seen some fairly significant changes. Enthusiasts craved some bright and bold colour to break up the monochrome monotony, and watchmakers – like Audemars Piguet – duly responded. It’s worth remembering that Audemars Piguet have been creating luxury watches in the Vallée de Joux since 1875, and they have achieved a level of prestige that is unparalleled in watchmaking. Redesigning their iconic Royal Oak to incorporate some bigger and bolder colours had to be perfect.

Blue has been the spearhead of the colour revolution in watchmaking, and the combination of the blue Grande Tapisserie dial and 41mm 18-carat pink gold case is stunning. This contrast is also seen on the two-tone dial, as the gold toned counters are beautifully highlighted. Continuing the bold blue theme, the alligator strap this timepiece is supplied on is an incredibly bright blue which perfectly matches the colour of the dial. The fastening is an 18-carat pink gold Audemars Piguet folding clasp.

Housed within the 42mm pink gold case is the self winding calibre 2385, a movement that is comprised of 304 parts and offers 40 hours of power reserve.

If blue was the instigator of the new colour trends, then brown is the noisy neighbour waiting to take over. An obvious but (until recently) relatively ignored colour in watchmaking, brown offers a warm alternative to the harshness of white and black. Combining the 41mm 18 carat pink-gold case and bezel, and the gold toned counters on the dial, the Royal Oak Chrono is a stunning fusion of iconic watch heritage and ultra-modern styling. This timepiece is also powered by the self winding calibre 2385.

Like with all Audemars Piguet timepieces, the thing that sets the Royal Oak Chrono apart is the quality of its finishing. The case and bezel both feature a combination of polishing and brushing, and the contrast between the two finishes is stunning. This is continued on to the bracelet, which is again crafted from 18 carat pink gold and offers supreme comfort.

FROM LITTLE ACORNS

When the Scottish Open tees off this July, there will be one particular wristwatch lurking in most of the top players’ lockers back at the Gullane clubhouse. Darren Clarke, Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter and Henrik Stenson will have all de-wristed their treasured Audemars Piguet Royal Oaks before taking to the hallowed greens.

THESE CHIMING MEN

Audemars Piguet’s Supersonnerie has revolutionised the minute repeater complication, says Alex Doak – just as AP’s watchmakers have revolutionised so much of Switzerland’s sacred craft.
